Sixteen
boats fronted - from Christchurch, Tmaru, Dunedin and Alexandra.
Surprisingly 10 boats from the South Island's contest fleet of 22
didn't enter but there were 4 new faces
We were extremly fortunate to get all races done as there were gales
for days before, through the nights and 30 minutes after we finished
the contest Saturday. However the winds during racing were light
5 -10 knots mostly and shifty from about 330deg M round to 180. Every
race was on a different heading and had changes, sometimes multiple and
drastic, to keep the legs fair.
At the end of the first days four races we had had four different
winners - Charade, Cannonball, Lyric and Outlaw and with Superann (in
the hands of a fourteen year old) also getting into the podium places
for the day. It looked like the contest might be in for a shake up. Day
two's racing was a little fresher at times and although Cannonball got
seriously buried at times as any number of boats found themselves
leading the pack, she did come through and win all four for the day.
The final morning was again only gentle and Outlaw put some interest
back in by winning the first race with Cannonball fourth but it was
shortlived as Richard Hawkins cleared out in the last. He won the
championship with 6 firsts, a second and a fourth counting and 2
fourths dropped.
